Storm Watch: SLVUSD Schools Canceled 1/26 and 1/27

Letter from SLVUSD Superintendent Laurie Bruton:

January 25, 2021

Dear SLV Family and Friends, School will be canceled for Tues. Jan. 26, 2021 and Wed. Jan. 27, 2021, due to evacuations impacting both staff and students.

Greetings to all and hope this finds you safe and sound. Areas of the San Lorenzo Valley have been placed under evacuation orders in preparation for the upcoming winter storm. The storm that is approaching our area is projected to deliver steady and at times, heavy rainfall that may result in flooding and/or debris flow. Santa Cruz County Emergency Services, and the Red Cross have opened a temporary evacuation site at SLVHS. SLV residents who live in the debris flow area have been notified to evacuate. This evacuation order has been issued in advance of the storm to allow for an orderly evacuation process.

If you do not live in a debris flow area, you may experience road closures due to flooding, debris, or loss of power to your home or entire area. The approaching storm may also have windy or breezy conditions that in the past, have resulted in power outages in the San Lorenzo Valley.
School will be canceled for Tues. Jan. 26, 2021 and Wed. Jan. 27, 2021, due to evacuations impacting both staff and students. Check your cell phone and email for any additional information from the school or district. If you have power at your home and have not been evacuated, you may access your student’s online classroom where assignments and activities may be posted for extra credit or additional class points depending on the class and teacher.

Teachers will be checking in with students as is possible based on their internet capacity during this storm.
Our food service pick up program will continue for Tues. Jan. 26, 2021 from 11:30am-1:30pm. Bus service for food pick up will continue for Tues. Jan. 26, 2021. Food will be provided for the entire week on the Tuesday pick-up.

The YMCA childcare at SLVE and Camp Campbell will be closed on Tues. Jan. 26 and Wed. Jan. 27. Information will be posted on the following website: ymcasv.org/camp-campbell

The Santa Cruz County Emergency Operations Center and the Sheriff’s Dept. have a call center for assistance regarding the debris flow or the evacuation, Please call: 831-454-2181.

This information is provided to help prepare you for the remainder of the week. Living in SLV is not for the faint of heart. We certainly have been through numerous tests of our patience, tenacity, and endurance this school year. Keep your family safe and we will be back in class online as soon as possible.

We’ll get through this, but it will require strength of character and perseverance on everyone’s part.
SLV Strong! – Laurie
